It’s About… The Adult’s Notes
Your file says who you were. Ephesians 1 says who you are in Christ. Before you ever had a record, God had a plan for you.
A charge, a case number, a date. It walks into every room before you do.
After a while you stop seeing the file as something about you and start believing it is you.
Chosen “before the foundation of the world.” Your record can’t cancel that.
Tap the ones still in yours. Nobody sees this but you.
Tap each part as you hear it.
Somewhere there is a file with your name on it, and it walks into every room before you do. Millions of people just want it to go quiet; New York now seals records for people who stay out of trouble long enough. God settled yours before you were ever in trouble.
At 15, Yusef Salaam was labeled one of the “Central Park Five” and spent nearly seven years locked up for a crime he did not commit. DNA cleared him in 2002, and in 2024 he took a seat on the New York City Council. The label was loud, but the final verdict got the last word.
Ephesus ran on the goddess Artemis and lived in fear of spells. When people there met Christ, they burned magic scrolls worth 50,000 pieces of silver (Acts 19:19). Paul writes back to them chained to a guard, and his first words are praise.
God “chose us in him before the foundation of the world” (Ephesians 1:4), before your first mistake. He calls you three things before your file says anything: saints, set apart as His; in Christ, living at a new address; and chosen, picked out on purpose. Your record cannot cancel a choice made before you had one.
John Newton, a slave-ship captain, wrote “once” in front of his past and let mercy write the rest. You don’t live for God’s approval; you live from it. When the old voice says “addict” or “felon,” answer with what God said first: chosen, blessed and holy in Him.
You will always be “in” something; the only question is whether it’s the system or the Savior. Follow Marcus (a composite, not a real person) through four “ins”:
The system can give you a number, but it can’t stop God from giving you a new name.
The crew claimed you for what you could do; God claimed you before any crew ever did.
Your debt was real, and in Christ it was paid and His riches were put in your name.
The old file still exists, but your life is hidden “with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3).
Tap the one you’ve asked yourself.
God “chose us” (1:4), and they “heard… and believed” (1:13); the Bible holds both together. Your choices matter deeply; they just aren’t the foundation, because God’s choice is.
He chose “before the foundation of the world,” before anyone had done anything good or bad, so your past was never the deciding factor. As Spurgeon put it, “If God had not chosen me, I would never have chosen Him.”
Fair would mean every one of us gets what our record deserves, so every rescue is mercy (Romans 9:14). And the door is still open: “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13).
THE CHARGES
God made up His mind about you before there was a world to make.
“He chose us in him before the foundation of the world.” (ESV)
“…not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace.” (ESV)

Born into his record, his guilt and his death, whether you asked for it or not.
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” (ESV)
Moved to a new address: His record, His righteousness and His life, all as a gift.
Tap the one you’ll say out loud this week.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.”
Name one thing from the old file you still carry, like a contact, a habit or a place, and tell one trusted person this week that you’re cutting it off.
“You’re getting him back now for good.... a true Christian Brother.”
